Ecologically Sustaining

The UIA/AIA World Congress of Architects
Chicago, 18-21 June 1993 defined sustainability in this way:

"A sustainable society restores, preserves, and enhances nature and culture for the benefit of all life, present and future; ... a diverse and healthy environment is intrinsically valuable and essential to a healthy society;"

"Ecologically Sustaining" seeks to ensure the natural environment is not adversely impacted by the presence of human beings, and is in fact enhanced by our presence.

For instance, a sustaining garbage collection service would be one in which garbage is turned to clean, reliable energy with by-products such as water or oxygen. Not only is it sustainable but enhances the quality of life for all of nature.
